Who am I and how did I become search engine optimization consultant?

I am just a guy with affinities towards technology. What helped me the most to understand how search engine results work is the fact that I spent thousands of hours on the internet, surfing and searching for different things. I gained an intuition for search results, or to put it better, I learned what I needed to type in order for results to return what I was looking for. I learned it by using 'advanced' searches often, and by learning the syntax to do these advanced searches through the regular search box. By doing this, I actually gained a feeling for how all these search query variations affect ordering of search results. Analyzing and comparing how different queries were matching text in different pages they were returning, I learned in which ways the use of natural (organic) language is beneficial.

Once I had my own web-site, I assumed there would be other people who could find some of the things I've done useful, and I then thought about what searches they would be doing if they wanted to find some of the things my web-site had to offer. I wrote my pages accordingly.

However, it was an obvious thing that many other things beside the page text affected search results, so I got interested in the more technical side of it. I read some technical papers and dissertations from guys who made these engines, and an engineering degree that I have has helped me understand these papers better. I read many articles, blogs, and forum discussions. All these bits of information filled in the gaps I had in my knowledge, and further strengthened my intuition on the subject.

I found out that people are paying enormous money for optimization and internet marketing of their web-sites, and since this was such an easy thing to me, I decided to do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) job on a side. I do not like word 'expert', word 'consultant' is much better. Still, I am using both because of SEO - people seem to be searching for SEO experts as much as they are searching for SEO consultants.
